Central Finland is about to release its energy balance update!

The energy balance includes forms of energy production, energy use by different sectors, financial value and emissions of energy purchase. Central Finland’s previous energy balance is from the year 2016 and by the end of 2020 Central Finland will have an updated version from the year 2019.

In Central Finland, the energy consumption in 2016 was 17,3 TWh. Almost half of the energy consumption was used in industry. Road transport consumed 17 % of the energy utilized and heating of the buildings consisted 28 % of the total energy consumption.  The share of renewables in energy sources was 55 % when the share of imported renewable  electricity was taken into account. 10 % of the energy input came from peat.

In order to carry out energy transition in a sustainable way, accurate and up-to-date data is needed. The results from energy balance can be used in regional development, e.g. when the improvement of renewable energy production is planned in regional level. According to preliminary results, e.g. the amount of peat used in energy production in 2019 was in the same level as in 2016. However, the total renewable energy production has increased, mainly due to the new bioproduct mill in Äänekoski.

In Central Finland, the regional steering group for just transition plan has been recently nominated. At this point, the regional plan has a focus on peat. The energy balance gives relevant information on the amount of peat used in energy production. The regional just transition plan will give directions how to decrease the amount of peat used in energy production, what kind of investments are needed and how to take into account the economical and social impacts of the transition.
