Croatian President appoints Council for Energy Transition

agosto 30, 2020

On 28th August 2020, the first session of the Energy Transition Council was held in Zagreb with the participation of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović. The Council is chaired by Dr Julije Domac, Special Advisor to the President for Energy and Climate, President of FEDARENE and Managing Director of REGEA.

For the first time in the history of Croatia, a Council of the President of the Republic of Croatia for Energy Transition has been established. This forum encapsulates the belief that there can be no political independence without energy independence, likewise there can be no future without thinking about climate protection. The Croatian president Milanovic appointed the Energy Transition Council comprising of prominent Croatian experts, scientists and entrepreneurs. The Council will advise the President of the Republic of Croatia and seek to answer the key question – how to ensure a technical and cost-optimal energy transition for the Republic of Croatia and the European Union.

Topics to be addressed by the Council include the role of citizens in the energy transition, the role of industry and entrepreneurs, energy efficient buildings and energy renovation, photovoltaics, hydrogen, batteries, digitization and smart cities.

The EU Green Deal is an opportunity for the desired transformation of the Croatian economy and society. The EU budget available to us from 2021 to 2027 supports investments in green and digital transition. Additionally, the EU’s next-generation recovery instrument calls for a transformation towards sustainable development. The Council will seek to answer key questions relating to energy and climate challenges through consultation with all relevant stakeholders and experts. The topic of energy transition is not exclusive since it will impact on all and as such needs to involve every citizen of the Republic of Croatia (as well as citizens across the European Union). Part of the work of the Council will be to illustrate this matter and its vital importance. This is a game where every player is needed and there is no space or time for any of us to stay on the sidelines or to stay seated on the bench. – said dr Julije Domac after the first meeting of the Council.
