EU City Facility Official Launch

febrero 21, 2020

On the 19th of February 2020, as part of the Covenant of Mayors – Investment Forum, the official launch of the EU City Facility took place. This new EU-funded project will provide financial support and services to municipalities or local authorities – and their groupings – across the EU.

The European City Facility aims to financially aid local authorities (or groupings of such) with the development of feasible investment concepts, which will trigger more than €320 millions of public and private investment. This aid will be supplied through hands-on, locally-rooted technical and financial expertise, and the provision public authorities staff with tools, networking and knowledge transfer opportunities to further facilitate the implementation of the plans. The investment concepts produced will help municipalities and local authorities (or their groupings) to access financing from both private and public funds, such as ELENA, PDA, etc.

The official launch of EU City Facility was moderated by Vincent Berrutto, Head of the H2020 Energy Unit in EASME. The presentation of the background of the project, the timeline and the opportunities available were explained to the attendees, with the participation of several speakers. Firstly, Claire Roumet, executive director of Energy Cities and coordinator of EU City Facility presented the project and the opportunities it gives to municipalities and their groupings. Luigi Acquaviva (Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuvianom, Italy); Henrik Bielefeldt (City of Sønderborg, Denmark), and Geert Vanhorebeek (City of Leuven, Belgium) advocated for the need of such aid describing the experiences in their own municipalities. Finally, Eero Ailio, adviser on energy transition and local governance at the DG Energy, provided the view of the European Commission on the project.

EUCF partnership is organizing a European information webinar to present the Facility platform and the application process on the 7th of April. Registration will soon be available on the official website. The first call will be launched in May 2020.
