European Energy Award: New Board ready to support Local Climate Action
The European Energy Award supports local authorities in establishing interdisciplinary planning approaches and implementing effective energy and climate policy measures through the rational use of energy and increased use of renewable energies. There are more than 1,500 municipalities participating today.
At the end of November, the General Assembly of the Association European Energy Award took place as a web-conference. Despite the digital format, 30 members and board members held a lively discussion on the future of the association and presented the status of the national eea programmes in their countries to each other.

An important highlight of the Assembly was the election of a new president for the Association and it was possible to win an outstanding personality as a candidate. Gudrun Heute-Bluhm, Head of the Städtetag Baden-Württemberg, was elected as new eea president. From 1995 – 2014 she was Lord Mayor of the city of Lörrach in Germany, who was the first German municipality to get awarded with the eea. She is very familiar with the eea and is personally convinced that the eea is a very good instrument to organise local politics and local administration in the field of energy, climate and mobility. In her inaugural speech, she referred to the European Green Deal, in which the eea is to play an important role for the municipalities in the coming years.

Besides the new presidency, there were further changes in the Board of the Association eea: Armand Dütz (European Energy Award Germany), co-founder of the eea and longest serving member of the eea Board, resigned for retirement reasons. In his place, Thekla Heinel (also European Energy Award Germany) was elected as new eea Board member. She has already been working for the eea in Germany and on international level for about 25 years. As Vice-President of FEDARENE she is closely linked to European wide expert network of regions and energy agencies.
All other members of the Board, coming from influential expert organisations like e5 Österreich-Programm für energieeffiziente Gemeinden (AU), Energy Agency NRW (DE), ADEME (FR), Trägerverein Energiestadt (CH), MY ENERGY GIE (LU) and Agentur für Energie Südtirol KlimaHaus (IT), have been confirmed in their position.
