Takeaways from the PEGASUS Microgrids Summer School
During this 2 days-event, participants explored what prospects microgrids are opening for local/regional energy resource exploitation in support of energy transition. Special attention was given to understanding how microgrids may become active components of integrated grids, optimise the use of local energy resources and enable the zeroing of the carbon footprint of Municipalities and Communities. During the event, the PEGASUS partners leveraged their knowledge from experimenting a simulation of functioning of microgrids in 7 pilot areas: France, Cyprus, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Malta, and Greece
In specific, during day 1 European Academics and Energy Sector experts focused on understanding the concept and identifying the technologies that make it happen. Regulation and innovation schemes and how they boost the microgrid concept were presented while paths on how microgrids and Energy communities can support energy transition were thoroughly explored. Microgrids as active components were analyzed and in specific their architecture, demand response schemes deployment and the emerging technologies that support the concept i.e storage and digitalization. The first day concluded with a vibrant roundtable discussion covering the main barriers that need to be lifted before the microgrid gets mainstream for wider implementation and use. Special focus was given to different business models of actors that can benefit from the microgrid concept. Moreover, the participants re-iterated the catalyst role that microgrids will have in managing high penetrations of RES in support of the energy transition.

During day 2 of the event, the consortium of the PEGASUS project presented the pilot systems developed and operated through the project and elaborated on the lessons learned that can have notable benefits through replicable solutions at pan European scale. PEGASUS partners concluded the event by presenting the key points of the event and the way to move forward in the promotion of microgrids in support of modern energy systems capable of accommodating high levels of RES penetration.
