Lisbon HUB-IN: the regeneration of Colina do Castelo
Lisbon is the multicultural Portuguese capital known for its colourful architecture, delicious food, artistic soul and enchanting fado music.
Tourism is fundamental for the local economy, but it is both an opportunity and a threat. In fact, the touristification of the historic urban area is one of the main reasons why inhabitants are moving away. Moreover, Lisbon faces problems such as social and environmental vulnerability, the gentrification of some districts, as well as the lack of funding for creative industries.
The Colina do Castelo HUB: be part of the story!
Lisboa HUB-IN strives to be an engine of transformation for the sustainability and well-being of the communities through the sharing and convergence of innovation and traditions. The historic urban area involved in the project is Colina do Castelo and it includes the neighbourhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, São Vicente, Castelo, Sé, Intendente and Graça.
The main mission is to fight against the desertification of the historic urban area by keeping their authenticity and identity, protecting and leveraging their material and immaterial heritage. The goal is to foster the promotion of the local culture, arts and crafts, enhancing these activities and improving their presence on the market, linking existing initiatives and testing new sharing and circular business models. Finally, Lisbon strives to promote climate action for better living conditions and comfort for local communities.
Stakeholder engagement is key to success. A citizens’ assembly will contribute to developing the HUB. The aim is to empower local communities by ensuring they have their direct say in the policy-making process, as well as checking that the strategies developed by the city council and parishes are adapted to the reality and constraints of the historic urban area.
A roadmap will guide the implementation of a series of concrete actions aiming to transform Colina do Castelo into an authentic, inclusive, sustainable, lively area.
Through the HUB-IN project, eight city pilots are transforming selected historic urban areas into “Hub of Innovation and Entrepreneurship“. Visit the HUB-IN website to learn more.
