City twinning – step up for the climate!
Arnsberg, a german city, hosted the second meeting in September of the city climate partnership with its twin city Alba Iulia (Romania) in the framework of the BEACON project.
A long-standing cooperation
The two cities, officially twinning since 1974 (well in the Ceaucescu era) have focused so far their cooperation on cultural and educational issues.
Now, assisted by Energy Cities, their exchange is stepping up one level and their exchange has got a new dimension integrating climate and sustainable energy issues in their discussions.

The ultimate aim though is to engage in joint actions.
The two cities have agreed on a climate partnership work plan that includes the planning ahead for a “BEACON Camp for climate action”. It’s a exchange program for city servants enriching discussions on climate issues as well as climate exchange program in schools and joint actions on sustainable mobility. This camp will take place during the European Mobility Week in 2020.

Alba Iulia and Arnsberg have also shared their knowledge and experience on:
- using smart technologies,
- engaging youth and elderly citizens in climate actions,
- integrating climate issues in city image development,
- local energy and mobility management as well as air quality monitoring.
The next meeting will take place in Alba Iulia in March 2020.
