Energy Cities endorses fossil fuels non-proliferation treaty

abril 13, 2021

Inspired by the 1968 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, a group of organisations launched “The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty” (FFNPT), a global initiative to phase out fossil fuels and support a just transition. A FFNPT would be a companion treaty to the UNFCCC/Paris Agreement, focused on winding down the supply of fossil fuels.

“Climate change, like nuclear weapons, is a major global threat”

This treaty should
foster international cooperation to phase out fossil fuels production and fast
track the transition to safer and more effective energy solutions. It calls for
cooperation in three main areas:

  • Non-proliferation, to put an end to new exploration and production of coal, oil and gas;
  • Global disarmament, to regulate the phase out of existing stockpiles;
  • A peaceful, just transition, to promote the use of existing renewable energy-based solutions, but also to come up with new ways of meeting our needs, leaving no one behind.

Energy Cities has joined the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty and you can too!

Organisations,
companies, individuals and governments at all levels can endorse the Fossil
Fuels Non-Proliferation Treaty. The global campaign sees support from municipal
governments as a key element of building the profile and momentum of this
initiative.

Do you want to pitch
the Treaty to your local government or draft a motion for your council? Have a look at the cities campaign resources
