Get ready for the European Sustainable Energy Week 2020

junio 05, 2020

This year, the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) will take place online from the 22nd to the 26th June. The EU Commission’s main event on energy & sustainability will host many different workshops and conferences around the theme “Beyond the crisis: clean energy for green recovery & growth”. Local sustainable energy events – “Energy Days” – will also be organised by public and private organisations during the month of June.

We selected some of them, to help you navigate the programme. Don’t forget to register. See you there!

Are NECPs fit to deliver
the EU Climate Law?

16 June, 10 – 11:30

As part of the European Union’s 2030 climate
and energy package, EU Member States are required to develop energy and climate
strategies (NECPs). Following the launch of the European Green Deal and the
publication of the EU Climate Law proposal, this session will discuss their implications on the NECPs and climate and
energy targets
. It will explore how the latter could set Member States on
the path to climate neutrality by 2040 in line with the Paris Agreement. The
impact of the coronavirus pandemic on various financing opportunities such as
the proposed Just Transition Mechanism, the new investment scheme under Invest
EU and the EIB public loan facility will also be discussed.

District heating: working
towards local sustainable solutions

18 June, 13:30 – 15:00

The climate neutrality ambition established in
the European Green Deal requires efficient solutions for sustainable energy. District
heating is one of those: it enables tapping local resources, fostering a localised
and a greener economy. In this session, co-organised by the European Covenant
of Mayors, the city of Bucharest and Rotterdam, together with other
organisations will provide interdisciplinary perspectives and share experiences
on district heating as a sustainable
energy solution on the local level.

Grids and communities:
value and new services for the energy transition

20 June, 14 – 15:30

This session will bring together Distribution
systems Operators, energy communities stakeholders, regulators, clusters,
technological players, project managers to discuss the roles and benefits of distribution grids and energy communities
in a decarbonized and decentralized energy system
. What future interactions
and partnerships are to be found between conventional and new actors? How could
we develop regulatory and pricing frameworks to leverage business models and
local innovation for flexibility services, e-mobility and aggregation?

How to successfully design
smart sector integration in the twin climate and digital transition?

23 June, 14 – 15:30

The session aims at providing concrete ideas,
solutions and “no-regret” options for an energy transition that is feasible,
economically viable and environmentally sustainable through the various
opportunities that frontier technologies
offer. It also aims at creating synergies with other policies, regionally and
internationally such as the Digital Agenda or Circular Economy and not least
fuelling the re-start of Europe’s and the global economy after the immediate
tackling of the pandemic.

The role of local
authorities in a fair energy transition, through retrofitting buildings

24 June, 09 – 10:30

The ambitious EU targets set up in the Green
Deal present both a challenge an opportunity for local authorities. The
building sector is amongst the most energy intensive in the European Union: refurbishing
and retrofitting buildings is key in order to accelerate the sustainable energy
transition. Furthermore, raising energy efficiency leads to improved access to
sustainable and affordable energy for all. The
Covenant cities of Glasgow, Wroclaw and Tartu will tell us about their retrofitting
strategy
, and how they are fostering an inclusive energy transition at
local level.

Cities driving the green
recovery: boosting investments for local actions

24 June, 11 – 11:30

The current crises has added a lot of financial
pressure on local authorities. Now more than ever it is important for cities to
match financial resilience with climate resilience. The purpose of this event
is to present and discuss with European policy makers and city officials how
the European City Facility can
support local authorities to transform their local climate and energy roadmaps
into real investments and help them transition towards climate neutrality.

Empowering consumers
through energy communities

24 June, 16 – 17:30

The purpose of this session is to raise
awareness on the opportunities offered
to citizens when participating in Energy Communities
as well as how they
can contribute to the recovery efforts. It will further inform the ongoing
debate on what needs to be done to create an enabling environment for the
development of Energy Communities, looking at opportunities and challenges for
specific territories such as islands, rural and urban areas. Our member city
Heerlen will bring in their experience following the launch of the city’s solar
cooperative.

Heating and cooling
planning for greener cities: local resources first!

30 June, 9 – 12:30

European cities and regions have prepared or are in the process of developing ambitious climate and energy strategies and action plans, committing to net-zero carbon by 2050 – some even earlier. Nevertheless, many governments still need to better identify and analyse solutions to make energy demand more efficient on one hand and to meet the demand with efficient, cost-effective and greener energy sources on the other hand. During this online event, you will be able to learn more about the Hotmaps toolbox for energy planning, while exchanging with researchers, developers, energy planners and city representatives on the available technologies and possible visions and models to decarbonise heating and cooling.

The Covenant of Mayor
– East
is also
planning some activities in the framework of EUSEW. More information will soon be
available on their website.
