Nicosia HUB-IN: a more sustainable and inclusive future
Nicosia is a Cypriot city rich in art and history. Following the Turkish invasion in 1974, it is the last divided capital of Europe. Since then, a significant percentage of derelict and empty buildings, as well as underused plots, are reducing the attractiveness of its historic urban area. The municipality strives to enhance the well-being and life of residents and visitors through urban transformation, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Look at the past and see the future
During the co-creation and co-design work conducted in the framework of the HUB-IN project, Nicosians asked for more green spaces, better conservation of buildings, more affordable housing and rentals, an improved sense of belonging, as well as more attention to young people’s needs.
Through the HUB-IN project, the municipality aims to undergo a process of urban transformation and heritage-led regeneration by fighting neglect and abandonment. The goal is to turn the historic urban area into a people-centric, revitalized, vibrant destination, home to a range of innovative and creative entrepreneurs, where the community thrives.
To transform Nicosia into a powerhouse of culture and innovation-led transformations, the HUB-IN project pursues three missions:
Mission 1: The Hood | Establish a strong and inclusive neighbourhood: improving the local experience and creating a sense of belonging.
Mission 2: The Platform | Establish a user-friendly platform to serve as an umbrella and a bridge within the city center.
Mission 3: Activations | Establish a strong mechanism of historic urban area to be welcoming, transparent, and measurable for all.
A roadmap will guide the implementation of a series of concrete actions aiming to bring back Nicosia’s walled historic center to life. Read more about the project here.
Through the HUB-IN project, eight city pilots are transforming selected historic urban areas into “Hub of Innovation and Entrepreneurship“. Visit the HUB-IN website to learn more.
